C A N O N; trivia, confirmed details, important things.
• His evil master was male. (Referenced from Character Story 4, 'under his rule'.)• We do not know what his previous name was. Alatus is his Yaksha name, not his old one.
• Xiao mainly fights against the evil manifestations produced by the remnants of the defeated gods from the Archon War, and the war he fights will never come to an end.
• Zhongli makes Xiao a pain relief, called Remedium Tertiorum. (Zhongli Voiceline)
• Xiao necklace has a metal dagger-like object on it called a vajra in Buddhism, which is a ritual weapon symbolizing indestructibility. It's usually combined with a bell, but instead Xiao has a censer, which is also something used for protection against evil.
• His tattoo is an upside-down peacock-like bird.
• Adepti possess a "third eye" that allows them to channel elemental energy. While Xiao received a Vision, he does not need its aid to manipulate elemental energy. He no longer remembers the moment he received his Vision, and it is also tiny compared to other Vison-bearers.
• Xiao is Ganyu's teacher/mentor figure, however he believes that he would not be suitable for her long term. She also does not like the idea of teaming up with him, since anyone who ever has have died.
• The reason Xiao enjoys Almond Tofu is due to its texture, resembling that of the dreams he once consumed. He was forced into doing so by his previous master.
• Almond Tofu, despite the name, is not tofu at all but a dessert made from apricot kernel milk, agar, and sugar. In Liyue Gourmet Tour Issue No. 4, the dish is made with almonds, milk and starch - as well as a drizzle of osmanthus-infused honey.
• Xiao says that he has no need for sleep.
• He refers to Zhongli with 大人 (daren), which is a polite honorific for superiors, aristocrats and elders.
• Though only mentioned to be over 2000 years old in his character stories, Xiao was shown present at the sealing of Guizhong's remains after her death 3700 years ago, so he's more likely 4000.
• Venti once saved him from being consumed by his karmic debt by playing the flute.
• He teleports in puffs of black, white and green smoke a la Nightcrawler.
• When receiving his new name from Zhongli, the Geo Archon said "In the fables of another land, the name Xiao is that of a spirit who encountered great suffering and hardship. He endured much suffering, as you have. Use this name from now on."
• The Qixing was is tasked with supporting Xiao in subduing demons, and Wangshu Inn is a front organization made for him to rest.
• He used to hate the Lantern Rite festival, as with it came a burst of abnormal force amid the slain gods and he has to fight them day and night.
• He longs for a day to come when he will wear the mask and dance - not to conquer demons, but to the tune of that flute amid a sea of flowers.
• His many titles include Vigilant Yaksha, Guardian Yaksha, Conqueror of Demons, Bane of all Evil, General Alatus, and Alatus the Golden-Winged King.
• He dons a Nuo mask during battle, and performs the Nuo Dance of Evil Conquering in his burst. When wearing the mask, this karmic debt manifests itself, greatly enhancing both his combat abilities as well as the suffering he must endure.
• His constellation, Alatus Nemeseos, means winged nemesis. In the original Chinese, it's Golden Winged Great Peng.
• His deepest, most hidden element is gentleness. He's very reticent to show this side of himself to others.
H E A D C A N O N; unconfirmed details, fiction, fun.
• Unlike with Zhongli, he refers to Morax/Rex Lapis as 天神 (tianshen), referring to divine beings associated with the celestial realm or heaven.• He definitely has a crush on the Traveler, but doesn't really know how to handle that. Instead he offers his protection as the only one that can call on him aside from Zhongli.
• Bosacius gave him his tattoo, and it has powdered jade in it. He wanted to give Xiao more, but he tapped out after one.
• His karmic debt has him in constant chronic pain, and it gets a lot worse after he's been fighting and using his mask. There are days when it is unbearable, which is when he uses the pain relief he gets from Zhongli.
• Xiao most likely have wings even if he doesn't show them in-game. His yaksha alias is Alatus, the Golden-Winged King, and in the original Chinese that name is Jinpeng, referring to the Golden-Winged Great Peng - a mythical creature derived from the Hindu legend of Garuda, the Golden-Winged Eagle. I enjoy the idea of them being fully gold or with jade coverts and gold primaries/secondaries.
• While he's definitely a Peng, how that creature looks is very different in different myths - from bird-man mix, fish-bird to full bird - and his 'canon' plush form is full bird. The tattoo shows something peacock-like in shape, so his true form might be a peacock or a phoenix, as those are closely related in mythology. (A phoenix is also usually portrayed together with a dragon, and Morax saved him.)
• If he ever changes form, though, he prefers a chunky little songbird as the peacock is too painful for him - especially after the karmic debt started blackening his feathers.
• Morax taught him the basics of how to fight with a spear/polearm, and he further developed it with the other yaksha.
• Adepti can enjoy mortal food but do not require it. In Chinese mythology these types of beings can absorb sustenance directly from things like morning mists and dew water. Xiao also enjoys qingxin.

Xiao is illuminated beast, an animal that has either gained human intelligence, immortality and power from age, the blessings of a god, or was been born one. It's uncertain which type of origin he has, but originally he was some form of bird. It has been shown as a chibi finch-like bird in marketing, but its somewhat unclear to exactly what kind he is. (It is most likely a Peng (or Garuda) since his Chinese name is Jinpeng, and his title is 'Golden-Winged Peng' in Chinese.)
An illuminated beast can eventually reach a human form, and it seems that Xiao prefers his over his animal form, as we never see him in bird form or with bird features in the game or anywhere else outside some art and a plush. We never seen his wings in-game either, but he definitely has them since his title has 'Golden-Winged' in the name.
Adepti is the name for illuminated beasts and gods of Liyue, Xiao's home nation. What exactly is defined by the term 'adepti' is ambiguous, but supernatural beings are usually referred to as an 'adeptus'. Xiao calls himself 'Adeptus Xiao' several times.
Lastly, Xiao is also a yaksha. Yakshas was a name for particularly fierce illuminated beasts, both in appearance and their martial prowess. They waged a never-ending war against the monsters and other such manifestations of the gods' hatred. Over time, this task stained them with karmic debt which wore away at their souls and sanity, until only Xiao was left. He is in constant pain from this debt, and is in danger of losing his mind as well one day.
These backgrounds have given him powerful abilities, most of all mastery over wind and speed. He can teleport places, break his fall, take steps on air and jump impossibly high thanks to this. He heals quickly, does not need to eat or sleep and is lighter than a normal human being, making it easier for him to climb and glide.
POLEARM FIGHTER
Xiao's chosen weapon is a spear (or polearm). He wields his spear with precision, each movement aided by wind and honed by centuries of combat. His fighting style emphasizes mobility, precision, and efficiency, flashing back and forth between enemies.
The spear this journal is named after is his signature weapon. He can call for it out of thin air.
ANEMO POWERS
In the world of Teyvat, elemental powers run through all natural things. While mortals need a Vision to wield the elements, as a supernatural being, Xiao doesn't really need one. His element is Anemo, or Wind, and while he does own a smaller-than-normal Anemo Vision, he doesn't really need it.
Both Vision-holders and Adepti possess the ability to focus their senses and perceive the world through Elemental Sight. This allows them to detect and analyze the elemental composition of objects and living beings around him, as each of the seven elements - Anemo (Wind), Pyro (Fire), Geo (Earth), Hydro (Water), Cryo (Ice), Dendro (Nature), and Electro (Lightning) - glow with their respective colors. (Teal, Red, Yellow, Blue, Light Blue, Green, and Purple.)
More than just a passive ability, they can also track concentrated traces of elemental energy left behind by creatures or individuals, following their trails like a true predator of the wild. For instance, if someone frequently wields fire magic, their body will bear faint remnants of flame, revealing their connection to fire.
Xiao uses the wind to throw himself forward with his spear in what can only be described as a half-teleport, half-lunge. He can even do this in the air.
In more dire battles, Xiao dons his Nuo mask. With it on, his karmic debt erupts in full force, eating away at his vitality but also imbuing him with tremendous speed and strength. He can use this to fight normally, or jump high into the air and plunge down with his spear, slamming it into enemies and making blades of wind erupt from the ground all around him. He can only do this for a limited time, however, since the physical and mental toll is extreme.
